TITLE

Identification and Characterization of Nettle and Broom Clones for the Textile and Phytotherapeutic Sector

OBJECTIVE

-Evaluation of the cultivation problems of the nettle and broom species and of their productivity in Tuscany region (Italy) as well as research and selection of local clones with high fiber and metabolite contents of interest for the phytotherapeutic sector and/or cosmetic; -Evaluation of different methods of fiber extraction and of the quality of the extracted fiber; -Study and realization of a laboratory prototype for the scutching; -Optimization of methods of extraction, fractionation and analysis for qualitative-quantitative evaluation of metabolites in order to characterize the tissues of both species; -Obtaining standardized polyphenolic extracts to be used as natural antioxidants for their antifungal and antimicrobial properties; -Chemical characterization of the by-products of the fiber extraction process and evaluation of their possible use.
